On these days 21st – 25th July 1918: New Officers arrive

21.7.18 VERQUIN: Battalion relieved 1/6th South Staffordshire’s in Brigade Support on the ESSARS SECTOR.

22.7.18

92865 Pte Archer Harrison was made Prisoner of War.

24.7.18 TRENCHES: 2/Lieut REH STOTT and 2/Lieut DJ CLARKSON joined Battalion.

25.7.18 TRENCHES: 2/Lieut LAB BECHER joined Battalion.

25.7.18 TRENCHES: 2/Lieut SN DEURANCE proceeded to England for report to War Office.


Donald James Clarkson served with the 1/6th Battalion from 24th July to 8th August

Donald James Clarkson died 2 weeks later aged 18.

“He was carrying out a particularly difficult task, accompanied by two N.C.O.’s, and had gained valuable information, when he was shot by the enemy. I deplore greatly the loss of this valuable and gallant young officer, who promised to be a credit to his battalion.”

Robert Edwin Hugh Stott served with the 1/6th Battalion from 24th July 1918 until 5th March 1919


Lancelot Allen Blakeney Becher served with the 1/6th Battalion from 24th July 1918 until the end of the War

On this day 16th July 1918: 2/Lieuts Albert Mackintosh and William Bavin joined for duty

16.7.18 VERQUIN: 2/Lieut A MACKINTOSH and 2/Lt W BAVIN joined Battalion.

Albert Mackintosh from Colville Drive in Nottingham served with the 1/6th Battalion from July until October 1918, when he was wounded and returned to England.

William Bavin from Nottingham served with the 1/6th Battalion until he was killed in action on the 29th September 1918.

On this day 13th July 1918 – 2/Lieuts John and Cecil Bertram Newell arrive

13/7/18 TRENCHES: 2/Lieut J NEWELL and CB NEWELL joined Battalion.

Cecil Bertram Newell from Maccelsfield was Commissioned in December 1917 and arrived in France in June 1918. He served with the 1/6th Battalion from 13th July 1918 and was still serving at the end of the War. Was awarded the Military Cross.

John Newell from Dungannon in Country Tyrone. Commissioned December 1917. Transfered to the 39th Battalion Machine Gun Corps on 12th September 1918.

2/7/18 VAUDRICOURT PARK: Lieut NHG LAWLESS proceeded to England to report to War Office.

Norman Hampden Grey Lawless (WO339/12618) was born 1891 in Norwich. Served with the 1/6th Sherwood Foresters from January to June 1918. Later served in the League of Nations.

2-5/7/18 FOUQUIERES: Cleaning and training under Battalion instruction.

On 1st July 1918 – Thomas Greaves is mortally wounded

1/7/18 LE QUESNOY: Capt T GREAVES wounded in action and died of wounds. 2/Lieut W BLOOD wounded in action.

Thomas Greaves from Chesterfield was mortally wounded when his “C” Company HQ, which was in a conservatory at Gorre, was hit by a heavy shell.

William Blood was transferred to Hospital in England and returned to the 1/6th Battalion in December 1918. He was demobilised in April 1919 having originally arrived in France in February 1918.

1.7.18 GORRE SECTION: Hostile artillery fairly active during the morning. Eight patrols out during the night and one by day. Brigadier General PR WOOD CB, CMG retired and took over Command of the Brigade.

On this day 28th June 1918 – 2/Lt Meakin was wounded

28.6.18 Trenches: 2/Lt W MEAKIN wounded in action.

William Meakin had arrived in France in April 1918 and had joined the 1/6th Battalion just ten days earlier. He was transferred to England in October and did not return to France.

26.6.18: Hostile artillery fairly active, chiefly on “ROUTE A KEEP”. MGs active again during the night. Five patrols were out, two of which encountered enemy patrols.

17.6.18: Hostile artillery more active – especially against left sub sector. Two patrols were out during night.

Lieut.-Col. RW CURRIN DSO took over command of the Brigade during the temporary absence of Brig.-General PR WOOD CB CMG who took over command of the Division during Divisional Commander’s absence on leave.
