The Band and Bugle Bands of the Territorial Battalions
In chronological order
Clay Cross Volunteer Band
“Clay Cross Volunteer Band & Regimental Pet” (unknown publisher) circa 1905.
The Clay Cross Volunteer Band was also known variously as:-
- 17th Derbyshire Rifle Volunteers (Clay Cross) or 17th D.V.R. (Clay Cross).
- Clay Cross (3rd Rifles) or Clay Cross Rifle Corps.
Close up view of the Regimental Pet and two young bandsmen. The presence of Duke I on this photographs confirms that it was taken prior to 1906.
Lieut.-Colonel Geoffrey Meinertzhagen Jackson is also present in Civilian Clothes. Colonel Jackson had been gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the 2VB the Sherwood Foresters on 11th April 1891 and had been allowed an extended term of Command. Indeed, Jackson had taken over Command of the Battalion in May 1904 from Colonel Herbert Brooke-Taylor and he was instrumental in the smooth transfer from the 2nd Volunteer Battalion to the 6th Battalion Notts and Derby Regiment under the “Territorial and Reserve Forces Act of 1907”.
Interesting picture of Tuba and Ephorium players. The Tuba Corporal has a pre-1902 coloured worsted ‘Bandsman’ Badge on his right sleeve. The Ephorium player wears the crossed rifles of a marksman.

1909 Scarborough
The 5th (Derby) Battalion Band at Scarborough Camp in 1909.
1910 Buxton
Believed to be the Band of the The 6th (Derbyshire) Battalion in Buxton during the Annual Camp of 1910.
Possibly a former regular soldier attached to the 6th Battalion or he re-enlisted into the Territorial Force.
He is wearing The Egypt Medal (1882-1889) with 3 Bars and The Khedive Star (1882 issue) which was awarded for the military actions involving the British Army during the 1882 Anglo-Egyptian War.
However, he did not serve in the Egyptian Wars with the 2nd Battalion Derbyshire Regiment because they were not entitled to any clasps as they were on duty only around Alexandria, some men did get the odd clasp who were attached to other regiments as signallers etc. Information kindly provided by Mel.
The same Sergeant is present with the Band at Clumber Park in 1913.
The 7th (Nottingham) Battalion, the Robin Hood Bugle Band at Hindlow Camp in 1910.

Band of the Worksop Rifle Volunteers perhaps?

146 Drummer Sergeant William Bramwell
William Bramwell was born Somercoates near Alfreton in December 1870 and was a fishmonger by trade.
William enlisted into the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, the Derbyshire Regiment in January 1887 and was issued with the Regimental Number 2265. He was promoted to Corporal (May 1891), Lance Sergeant (June 1891) and Sergeant Bugler (December 1891). William re-enlisted into the 6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters as a Sergeant Drummer on the 1st April 1908.
William attended all of the Annual Camps between 1908 and 1912, but appeared to have missed the 1913 Camp at Clumber Park.
In the 1911 Census William was living with his family at 19 Lockoford Lane in Stonegravels with his new wife Adelaide and their respective families.
William arrived in France with the 1st Reserve Reinforcement in June 1915 and was transferred back to England in September 1915. He was posted to the 3/6th Battalion in October 1915 and then later to the 5th Reserve Battalion before being discharged in January 1918.

Hi Mike, I have been trying to identify the old Bandsman wearing the Egypt Pair of medals. I believe him to be a James Cuthbert but I can’t find any service papers at the moment to a man with this name who served with a regiment in the Egypt Campaign of 1882. Hope you can do better than me from here on. Mel.
Dear Mel, thats great – many thanks. I’ll see what I can dig out
cheers Mike
