Pre-War Territorial who was killed in action

Amos Holmes was born in 1897 in Nottingham and enlisted into the Robin Hood Rifles before July 1914. He would have been 17 when he wrote from Hunmanby Camp so it is possible that he had only recently enlisted into the Territorial Force earlier that year.The 1911 Census shows that Amos was aged 14 and living at home with his parents Edward (b. 1862) and Fanny (b. 1865) and two brothers Harold Pilgrim (b. 1900) and Leonard (b. 1903). Amos was a Stationers Errand Boy and the family lived at 7 Lamcote Grove in Nottingham.

The Medal Index Card and BWM/VM Rolls (WO329/1406) show that Amos served overseas with the 15th and 2nd Battalions of the Notts and Derby Regiment. However, his Regimental number of 330398 suggests that he was serving in England with the 21st Battalion at the time of the Territorial Force renumbering in the spring of 1917 and only arrived in France after that date.Amos was killed in action with the 2nd Battalion on the 19th September 1918 aged 21 years and is Commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, which bears the names of over 9,000 men who fell in the period from 8 August 1918 to the date of the Armistice in the Advance to Victory in Picardy and Artois and who have no known grave.

At the time of his death the 2/Sherwood Foresters were involved in the attack Quadrilateral and suffered over 400 casualties.
