Left “C” Company; the Buxton Half Company 1914-15

This Role of Left “C” Company lists the names and addresses of 52 NCOs and Privates who lived in Buxton, Harpur Hill, Fairfield and Chelmorton.

From these 52 Pre-War Territorials, 29 men embarked with the 46th Division in February 1915 and 5 were killed in action during the Great War.

“C” (Heathcote) Company Casualties: May 1915

 This incredible document lists the men of Captain Edgar Heathcote’s Company that had been killed or wounded by the 7th May 1915.

It records the men by individual Platoons (9, 10, 11 and 12) and notes their Religion, trade, home town and the nature of the wound, or how they were killed in action. In total 7 men were killed and 14 wounded (with 4 very slightly).

At the bottom of the letter he writes:-

“I enclose address of Sharp’s mother (who has about 3 or 4 sons out here) given to me by his brother in the Lincoln’s, who came over to see Sharp – after he was killed. The Brother’s chief concern was for his mother. I saw Sharp dying – bullet into stomach – gave him morphine etc – quick death etc – in case you see the mother. The others killed were all instant ones-“

In a letter a letter to his mother John Steggles laments the loss of many of his comrades.

“My platoon has suffered about as much as any” continues Steggles. “Poor old No. 9, first one and then the other keep getting picked off, and we shall soon want reinforcements. Out of my section of 15, only 5 are left, and while I myself have come safely through up to now I have had some narrow shave. But I have sent them as good as anything they have sent me. In one hour last night I fired over a hundred rounds, and the night before that Albert Bedford and I were blazing away for all we were worth”.

3227 Pte. John Steggles from Chesterfield enlisted on the 20th October 1914 and was killed in action on 14th October 1915 aged 21. He was the son of William and Alice Steggles of 27 St. Mary’s Gate in Chesterfield and is Commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

The names come from the pocket book of 2973 L/Cpl Albert Edward Bedford MM. who served with “C” Company.

NOTE: Although it is recored that this event took place in September 1916; it is most likely that it took place in early 1917, probably between 6th January (when 7760 John Martin arrived in France and 29th April (when 3789 Wilfred Jepson returned to England).
