Douglas, timber merchant; 1896 – 1904; National Guarantee Insurance Coy., Edin., 1904 – 7; assistant factor Wemyss Estate Office 1907 –10, agent to Lord Vernon, Sudbury, Derby, 1910 – 20; factor Minto, Jan. 192( ). 9th R.S., Pte. and Sgt. 19( ); dischd. med. unfit; 5th V.B. Sherwood Foresters, Lt. and Asst. Adj. 1916 – 20.
Also, from my Bn of interest (9th Royal Scots) this man was commissioned into 14th Notts & Derbys, 21.7.15: Raine, George S., Pte 1628
Quite a number of East Midlands men were kilted and fighting with the ‘Ninth’ in 1917/1918.
my father lance corporal john cooper 5th batt sherwood foresters is the man resposible for the name tor top trench .it is the name of the street were he lived new mills high peak derbys. A few years ago the town erected a plaque in tor topp telling the story and him being the holder of DCM the actual sign was sent back to NEW MILLS and is now in the heritage centre and as recently been on antiques road show
