On these days 9th-13th July 1918 – a time for patrolling

9.7.18: Quite day. At 1am a small enemy patrol outside our wire was dispersed. Six patrols were out, two of which were by daylight. Enemy was encountered on two occasions.

10.7.18: Quite day. Two patrols were out by night and one by day.

11.7.18: Quite day. One patrol was out by night and one by day.

12.7.18: A very quite day. Eight patrols were out by night and one by day. Enemy was encountered on these occasions.

13.7.18: Quite day. Four patrols were out by night. Several of the enemy were seen standing to in posts in X15a.

 

 

72nd Trench Duty: 5th-15th July 1918

5/7/18: Battalion relieved 1/5th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment in the LEFT subsection of the ESSARS SECTOR.

Major WG HUTCHENCE 1st Battn DLI cross posted from 1/6th South Staffordshire Regiment and joined Battalion.

2/7/18 VAUDRICOURT PARK: Lieut NHG LAWLESS proceeded to England to report to War Office.

Norman Hampden Grey Lawless (WO339/12618) was born 1891 in Norwich. Served with the 1/6th Sherwood Foresters from January to June 1918. Later served in the League of Nations.

2-5/7/18 FOUQUIERES: Cleaning and training under Battalion instruction.

On 1st July 1918 – Thomas Greaves is mortally wounded

1/7/18 LE QUESNOY: Capt T GREAVES wounded in action and died of wounds. 2/Lieut W BLOOD wounded in action.

Thomas Greaves from Chesterfield was mortally wounded when his “C” Company HQ, which was in a conservatory at Gorre, was hit by a heavy shell.

William Blood was transferred to Hospital in England and returned to the 1/6th Battalion in December 1918. He was demobilised in April 1919 having originally arrived in France in February 1918.

1.7.18 GORRE SECTION: Hostile artillery fairly active during the morning. Eight patrols out during the night and one by day. Brigadier General PR WOOD CB, CMG retired and took over Command of the Brigade.

29.6.18: Hostile artillery active on roads and trenches of right subsection. Nine patrols were out during the night.

30.6.18: Quite except for some artillery action on the front line of right subsection. Nine patrols were out, two of which were by daylight.

307701 Pte Cyril John Rickett

Cyril John Rickett died of his wounds at home in Nottingham aged 19. Married to Millicent Gertrude Rickett of West Bridgford.

Most likely arrived in France in 1916 and was still serving in spring 1917 during the Territorial Force renumbering.


118287 Pte Harold Streets

Harold Streets of the 5th Reserve Battalion died of sickness in Hospital near Salfleet aged 19. Had only been mobilised in May 1918. Buried Heapham Lincs.

On this day 28th June 1918 – 2/Lt Meakin was wounded

28.6.18 Trenches: 2/Lt W MEAKIN wounded in action.

William Meakin had arrived in France in April 1918 and had joined the 1/6th Battalion just ten days earlier. He was transferred to England in October and did not return to France.
