3014/305888 L/Cpl Herbert Taylor was missing presumed killed during the raid

5th Aug: Philosophe heavily shelled during the evening (over 350 shells fell)

Amongst the 1/5th Battalion men killed were:-

  • 5533/202268 Pte William Pawsley and son of Mrs MA Pawsey of 5 Sea View, Lower Halstow in Kent.203448 Shaw
  • 203448 Pte Albert Shaw from Worskop who died of wounds in the 1st Casualty Clearing Station.
  • Lieut Loris Stiles Spargo aged 25 and son of Nicholas and Ellen Spargo of Tregolls in Truro, Cornwall.

December 1916 – the Division on the move in the general direction of the Somme Battle front. Day by day we got nearer. Could it be that we were destined for a position and another gigantic attempt in the Spring of 1917. We must wait and see what the Gods had to offer.

UntitledJuly 17: Moved back to support in village of ———-. Lived in a large chateau all very comfortable & really clean once more. Sorry to hear Tiny Simpson has died of wounds in hospital.

Tiny Simpson may be a reference to 2/Lt Herbert Simpson who died of his wounds on the 7th July and is buried in St. Sever Cemetery in Rouen.

17: The following reliefs took place this evening. The 5th Sherwood relieved the 6th Sherwoods in the RIGHT SECTOR trenches, the latter Battalion going into Brigade Reserve BELLACOURT. The 8th Sherwoods were relieved in the LEFT SECTOR trenches by the 7th Sherwood & proceeded to Divisional reserve in BAILLEUVAL.

The relief was completed without incident by 11.30 pm. Gas was discharged by the 137th Inf Brigade on our right this evening. This brought on a good deal of straafing but we got very little.

1938 Mellors

1938 Pte. William Mellors a fetler from Angel Yard in Chesterfield suffered from rheumatism and was admitted to 1st NMFA, 10 CCS and 23 General Hospital. Transferred to 46 NMD Base Depot on 24.9.15 and re-joined Battalion on 7.10.15.


The signallers monkey is mentioned for the first time.
