On this day 15th April 1918 – John Carruthers died of wounds aged 19

94581 John Joseph Carruthers died of wounds aged 19 at No 1 Casualty Clearing Station and buried in Chocques Military Cemetery.Son of Joseph and Ellen Carruthers of Hovingham in Malton Yorkshire. Native of Terrington.

Posted to the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 7th September 1917 under Auth CRCC 100685/ 3.9.17. Arrived in France late 1917/early 1918 and posted to the 1/6th Sherwood Foresters.

On this day 12th April 1918 – Frederick Gaunt died of wounds

269889 Pte Frederick William Gaunt from Pleasley died of wounds at the 23rd Casualty Clearing station

Enlisted into the 1/8th and arrived in France in August 1915. Later transferred to the 1/7th Battalion and posted to the 1/5th Battalion on the disbandment of the Robin Hood Rifles in 1918.

The 1/5th Sherwood Foresters suffered four casualties

  • 203661 Pte Walter Cammack. A colliery Clerk from Warsop who attested in November 1915 and was mobilised in March 1917. He arrived in France in June 1917 and was posted initially to the 2/6th Battalion before transferring to the 1/5th in July 1917. Walter left a wife and four children. See here
  • 7516/203244 L/Cpl Arthur Perkins from Dudley in Staffordshire.
  • 1380/305113 Pte Harold Sipson aged 26 and Son of Albert and Lizzie Sipson of 35 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield in Notts. Formerly 1380 in 1/8th Battalion.
  • 90733 Pte Charles Talbot aged 20 and Son of George and Martha Talbot of Cottam in Retford, Notts.

1/4/18: Usual harassing fire of hostile artillery. Nothing else to report.

On this day 29th March 1918

L/Cpl 6006/267188 Sydney George Currie from Surry died of wounds

Arrived in France in 1916 and previously served with the 1/7th Sherwood Foresters. Most Oakley transferred to the 1/6th Sherwood Foresters on the disbandment of the 1/7th Battalion.

On this day 12th March 1918 – more casualties

3779/241218 Pte Harold Dolby and 4313/241446 Pte Fred Watts died of their wounds

Harold Dolby was from Brimington and enlisted in February 1915. He arrived in France in 1916 and was previously wounded at Lievin on the 30th May 1917.

Fred Watts was from Calow and enlisted in June 1915 and arrived in France in 1916.

Both men were most likely wounded on the working party that claimed the lives of their comrades the previous day

On this day 11th March 1918 – three men of the 1/6th Battalion died

  • 3024/240854 Pte Joseph Askew from Sheffield.
  • 7690/242487 Pte Harold Foxon formerly 2458 Derbyshire Yeomanry.
  • 4441/241515 Pte John Stevenson from Chesterfield. Enlisted in July 1915 and served with “B” Company. Was previously wounded on 1.7.1916 at Gommecourt.

There is no specific information on how these three men died, but at the time the 1/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters were providing working parties for cable burying and it is most likely that they were killed during this work, possible the result of shell fire.

Two men were also mortally wounded at this time.


3024/240854 Pte Joseph Askew

Joseph Askew was a 32 year old labourer from Eckington who enlisted into the 2/6th Battalion in October 1914. He was transferred to the 1/6th Battalion in August 1915 and arrived in France with the III Reinforcement. He injured his eye and returned to hospital in England in December 1915. Joined the 6th Reinforcement in March 1916 in time for the Battle of the Somme.
