About mikebriggs1910

I'm not a Historian by profession - merely an (over) enthusiastic amateur. By day I'm a Professor of Genetics at Newcastle University with a translation research interest in rare bone diseases. At weekends I can be classified as a Yorkshire Cricket & Psychedelic Rock fan, but mostly I'm just on the Fells (or in the pub - when they were open!).

On these days 2nd-5th July 1918

2/7/18 VAUDRICOURT PARK: Lieut NHG LAWLESS proceeded to England to report to War Office.

Norman Hampden Grey Lawless (WO339/12618) was born 1891 in Norwich. Served with the 1/6th Sherwood Foresters from January to June 1918. Later served in the League of Nations.

307701 Pte Cyril John Rickett

Cyril John Rickett died of his wounds at home in Nottingham aged 19. Married to Millicent Gertrude Rickett of West Bridgford.

Most likely arrived in France in 1916 and was still serving in spring 1917 during the Territorial Force renumbering.

118287 Pte Harold Streets

Harold Streets of the 5th Reserve Battalion died of sickness in Hospital near Salfleet aged 19. Had only been mobilised in May 1918. Buried Heapham Lincs.

A nice little puzzle for a damp Thursday evening……….

What I do know:-

  • A postcard of the Empire Hotel, which was the HQ of the 2/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters until they moved to Luton on 3rd Feb 1915.
  • The postcard was posted from Epping on the 22nd Feb 1915.
  • The 2/6th Sherwood’s were undergoing a course of entrenching in Epping from 8th to 24th Feb 1915.

Therefore the card mostly likely came from a man of the 2/6th Sherwood’s – agree ?

What I don’t know:-

  • “Cecil House” is/was a old famous house on Wimbledon Common – but I can’t ID Lady Stanl(e)y
  • The message suggests a reasonably well-off young lady – “several of my foals at Liverpool Street [station]”
  • Any chance of an ID on Miss Thompson ?

Could there a link between Miss Thompson and an Officer of the 2/6th (or even other rank)?

But it’s not obvious to me at moment.

Unlikely to find an answer really, but I would like to know more about Cecil House and its occupants in 1914-15.
