Sept 13th. Still on guard. Aeroplanes still busy. Very nice day again. Parcel from Pinxton. 20 more relief’s arrived from Rouen.

Sept 14th. On guard again Aeroplanes still busy. Dull morning but nice later.

Sept 15th. On guard again. Rather few aeroplanes about, but German artillery more active than usual. Nice Day.

Sept 16th. Same as yesterday as regards everything. Relieved at 7 p.m. by 5th S.F. & went into trenches – No.11 in reserve again. Slept all night.

1938 Pte. William Mellors a fetler from Angel Yard in Chesterfield suffered from rheumatism and was admitted to 1st NMFA, 10 CCS and 23 General Hospital. Transferred to 46 NMD Base Depot on 24.9.15 and re-joined Battalion on 7.10.15.


The signallers monkey is mentioned for the first time.

Sampson JS

 John Stephen Sampson was Gazetted 2/Lieutenant in the 6th Battalion on 26th September 1914 from the Officer University Contingent of the Senior Division Officer Training Corps. He arrived in France on the 14th July 1915. He was promoted Lieutenant in August 1915 before transferring to England wounded. He did not serve in France again with the 1/6th Battalion.


2007 Whittaker2007 Pte. Charles Thomas Whittaker, a 20 year old miner from Alfreton was killed in action on this day and buried in Spoilbank Cemetery. Charles enlisted in June 1913 and served with “G” Clay Cross Company.


The sick and wounded men included:-

1313 coleman1313 Pte. Albert Coleman who suffered from lumbargo and was admitted to 1st NMFA and 46 DRS. He re-joined Battalion on 16.9.15.

(repairing dug outs or carrying stuff up tp front trench). 8-30 till about 11-30 fetching rations & R.E. stuff from dump & taking same to companies. Dull day but no rain. Desultory shelling all day.

Sept 6th. Had breakfast at 7 a.m. then got down again till 11 a.m. Otherwise same as yesterday. Weather improving.

Sept 4th. Roll call 7-30 a.m. Went to communion 8 a.m. Inspection by Gen. Plumer 1 p.m. Packed up in afternoon and set off to trenches near St Eloi (Yser Canal) at 6 p.m. Good halt about half way & had cocoa & took packs off transport wagons, found the trenches very muddy. Dull day, & showers at intervals.
