13th Trench Duty 5th – 19th August 1915
5.8.1915 Sanctuary Wood: Took over A8-12 & B1, B2 from the 5th Battalion. Order of Companies A B C D. Relieved in Maple Copse by 2nd Battalion.
Two men killed during the relief were:-
1776 Pte. John Barber a calico printer from New Mills who killed in action.

2838 Pte. George Birks a miner from Chesterfield who suffered a shrapnel wound and died later that evening at the 28th Casualty Clearing Station.

Zillebeke 23.6.1915: Took over trenches East of Zillebeke from 4th Yorkshire Regiment & 5th Durham Light Infantry.
Total casualties 1 Officer (Lt Davies) wounded. OR 1 killed 16 wounded.

9th Trench Duty 12th – 16th June 1915
Kemmel 12.6.15: Returned to trenches for 4 days – 6 KOYLI (Major Rigg) attached for instruction. On the 15th the enemy blew up J3 right and having bombarded the line – chief casualties sustained by 8th Battalion and KOYLI. Killed 2 wounded 4 OR.

On JUNE 12th we relieved our 5th Battalion, and S.L.I. in K 3 trench. We are having some of the K.O.Y.L.I. with us. K 3 is a support trench.

The two men killed were:-
2296 James Hart a shirt sorter from Chapel who was shot through the top of the head by a sniper.
241 William (Jack) Finney from Matlock Bath killed during stand to.
Both men are buried next to each other in Kemmel Château Military Cemetery and were the last men of the 1/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters to be buried in the Kemmel sector.
8th Trench Duty 3rd to 8th June 1915
Kemmel 3.6.1915: Returned to trenches for 5 days. Casualties: Killed 3 other ranks, wounded 1 Officer and 8 OR.
Headquarters at HOWITZER FARM. Took over L5 & L7 & M1, M2 & VIERSTRAAT.
5th Shropshire Light Infantry attached.
The men killed were:-
2140 Pte. Robert Ball a locomotive fireman from Fairfield near Buxton.
3205 Pte. George Fell a coal miner from Clowne.
2051 Pte. Walter Houghton a plate layer from Darley Dale.
They are buried next to each other in Kemmel Château Military Cemetery (Row D; 28-30).

7th Trench Duty 25th-30th May 1915
Kemmel 25.5.1915: Returned to trenches for 5 days. 2 Lieut G Glossop wounded slightly. OR killed 4 & wounded 22.

- 2208 Pte. Adam Brooks a quarry man from Middleton admitted to 8 CCS and 5 General Hospital and transferred to England on 10.6.15. Returned to France on 4.3.16 with 6th Reinforcement.
- 1803 Pte. Charles Bunting a machinist from Matlock who was admitted to the 1st NMFA with gastric enteritis.
- 284 Pte. Ernest Hallam wounded in the field.
- 3435 Pte. Ralph Hartley wounded in the field and returned to Battalion.
- 1591 Pte. Jack Guy wounded in the field and returned to Battalion.
- 1704 Pte. John Hall cyst on eyelid and admitted to 1st NMFA. Returned to duty.
- 1941 Pte. William Ryder shell wound in back and legs. Admitted to 1st NMFA, 8 CCS and 3 Canadian Hospital. Also caught scabies but returned to duty on 7.10.15.
- 1944 Pte Leonard Wilson GSW left hand and returned to Battalion.
- 2014 Cpl. Ernest Hallam wounded in hip and admitted to 1st NMFA, 8 CCS and 2 Canadian Hospital. Returned to duty on 26.06.15.
- 1838 Pte. Frank Mellor wounded in the field.
- 3291 Pte. Albert Biggin wounded in the field.
- 1463 Pte. Alfred Marchington wounded in the field.

MAY 17th. We went up to the trenches to relieve the 5th Battalion in T. 6. Trench on Reserve trench till MAY 19th. We were shelled heavy and had to retire into some dug outs close by, one shell dropped close and hit the M.G’s two only received slight scalp wounds.

May 17th. Went to communion in a field 8 a.m. Rained all morning & dull in afternoon. Set off to trenches near Dickebusch at 8-30 p.m. Wretched night raining all the time.

17th May 1915. Everything as usual, took stock of the medical drugs and went to the Hospital for new supplies. At night we went to the trenches at Rossingol. We had a very quiet night getting one man wounded at the dressing station about 3-30 a.m. He had a wrist broken with a bullet.
