On these days 13th -16th September 1915

Sept 13th. Still on guard. Aeroplanes still busy. Very nice day again. Parcel from Pinxton. 20 more relief’s arrived from Rouen.

Sept 14th. On guard again Aeroplanes still busy. Dull morning but nice later.

Sept 15th. On guard again. Rather few aeroplanes about, but German artillery more active than usual. Nice Day.

Sept 16th. Same as yesterday as regards everything. Relieved at 7 p.m. by 5th S.F. & went into trenches – No.11 in reserve again. Slept all night.

This reinforcement would most likely have comprised either sick men returning from duty or men that had arrived in France with the II or III reinforcements and who had been placed with the Number 2 Entrenching Battalion.

Charles Perry 12.9.15 Otites (ear infection) and admitted to 1st NMFA, 10 CCS and 1 Canadian General Hospital. Transferred to 46 NMD Base Depot on 29.9.15 and re-joined Battalion on 7.10.15.
1777 Pte Thomas Chatterton 12.9.15 GS wound in the neck and admitted to 1st NMFA, 17 CCS and 20 General Hospital. Transferred to England on 21.9.15. Returned to France on 4.3.16 with the 6th Reinforcement.
1853 Pte Charles Shaw 15.9.15 Admitted to 12 CCS and 3 General Hospital with diarrhoea. Transferred to England on 26.9.15. Returned to France on 10.11.15 with the V Reinforcement.
2979 Pte Henry Kingston 14.9.15 Admitted to 9 General Hospital with inflamed gums in the lower jaw. Transferred to CD and the 46 NMD Depot on 3.10.15. Re-joined Battalion on 1.12.15.
1579 Pte Patrick Fox 15.9.15 Broken denture and admitted to 1st NMFA and re-joined Battalion on 17.9.15.
2036 Pte William Gould 16.9.15 Wounded in the field.

Sept 12th. On guard again Same as yesterday. Aeroplanes busy again. Very nice day. In evening went to funeral of one of 5th Battn who was killed by a sniper.

The 5th Battalion man killed by a sniper was 2226 Pte. Joseph Newbury who was buried in Chester Farm Cemetery.

1188 Wright1188 Pte. John Wright, a miner from Danesmoor, was transferred to England on ‘SS Lydia’ pending discharge.

1938 Mellors

1938 Pte. William Mellors a fetler from Angel Yard in Chesterfield suffered from rheumatism and was admitted to 1st NMFA, 10 CCS and 23 General Hospital. Transferred to 46 NMD Base Depot on 24.9.15 and re-joined Battalion on 7.10.15.


The signallers monkey is mentioned for the first time.

Sampson JS

 John Stephen Sampson was Gazetted 2/Lieutenant in the 6th Battalion on 26th September 1914 from the Officer University Contingent of the Senior Division Officer Training Corps. He arrived in France on the 14th July 1915. He was promoted Lieutenant in August 1915 before transferring to England wounded. He did not serve in France again with the 1/6th Battalion.


2007 Whittaker2007 Pte. Charles Thomas Whittaker, a 20 year old miner from Alfreton was killed in action on this day and buried in Spoilbank Cemetery. Charles enlisted in June 1913 and served with “G” Clay Cross Company.


The sick and wounded men included:-

1313 coleman1313 Pte. Albert Coleman who suffered from lumbargo and was admitted to 1st NMFA and 46 DRS. He re-joined Battalion on 16.9.15.

Sept 5th. C Co. in support. Rose 7-30 a.m. & took breakfast to B Co. Then slept till 11 a.m. & on fatigue 11 – 12-30, 2 – 4-30 & 6 – 7. (repairing dug outs or carrying stuff up tp front trench). 8-30 till about 11-30 fetching rations & R.E. stuff from dump & taking same to companies. Dull day but no rain. Desultory shelling all day.

Sept 6th. Had breakfast at 7 a.m. then got down again till 11 a.m. Otherwise same as yesterday. Weather improving.

Sept 7th. Same as yesterday. Nice day.

Sept 1st. Roll call 7-30 a.m. Bayonet practice 11 – 11-45. Then short route march 12-00 till 12-45. Paid 20 frs at 2-30. Some went digging at night, but I was not selected. Band played at night again.

Sept 2nd. Roll call 6-30 a.m. Paraded at 7-30 with digging party, but told to fall out. Slept till dinner time & started moving to fresh billets at 2 p.m. Rain from 3 p.m. onwards. Everything beastly wet at night – wretched. Paraded at 5 p.m. with digging party & waited till 7-30 p.m. for motor buses. Did not turn up then, so dismissed – very glad.

Sept 3rd Rain nearly all day – wretched. Should have been inspected by Gen Plumer at 1 p.m. but declared off owing to rain. Did nothing but sleep & read. Went to a farmhouse at night & had a feed.

Aug 30th. Put packs on transport wagons when about halfway and got to bivouacs about 1 a.m. Very tired. Hot soup & tea ready. Then got down & slept till about 10 a.m. Parcel from Cis & Reg arrived. Rested all day. Band played in evening. 20 reinf arr. Two showers in morning but nice later. Roll call 9 p.m.

The men in this Reinforcement were most likely from the II and III Reinforcements that had arrived in France in June and August respectively.2797 Gregory

Service Record for 2797 Pte Gregory recording his arrival in France with the III Reinforcement in August 1915 and subsequent posting the Battalion on the 24th August 1915. Its is unlikely that the men joined the 1/6th Battalion in the front line trenches, but remained in Brigade Reserve until such time the Battalion were relieved from front line trench duty.

29.8.1915 Canal I.33/34.C: Relieved by 5th Battalion. Casualties OR died of wounds 2, wounded 11. Much shelling during tour.

Aug 29th. Off duty from stand down till 2 p.m. Then on fatigue till 4-30. Packed up after tea and were relieved at 8 p.m. by 5th S. F.

Done 6 days in this time. Nice morning, but rain later, so roads rather nasty when going out. Very few cases this time. Shaw and Smithurst injured by shell which failed to explode etc.

Buried in shell explosion, suffered shock and transferred to England on 30.8.15. Discharged due to sickness on 3.5.16 (para 392 XVI KR).
