During November 1918 seven men from the 5th Reserve Battalion died of influenza

Six of the these men had been mobilised and posted to the 5th Reserve Battalion between August and September 1918. They were all admitted to Hospital between the 8th and 13th November 1918.

120935 Pte Joseph Holt aged 31. A coal miner from Kirkby who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 1st August 1918. He was admitted to Hospital on the 13th November and died at Louth in the VAD Hospital 9 days later. Son of Mary Ann Laban (formerly Holt), of Mount Pleasant Rd., Castle Gresley, Burton-on-Trent, and the late James Alfred Holt. Born at Linton Heath.


120963 Pte John Lowbridge aged 29. A miner from Chesterfield who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 1st August 1918. He was admitted to Hospital  on the 13th November and died at Louth in the VAD Hospital 3 days later. Son of John and Emma Lowbridge, of Pear Tree Cottage, Bridge St., Pilsley.


121031 Pte Frank Edward Bennett a coal miner from Pleasley Hill. who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 8th August 1918. He was admitted to Hospital on the 11th November and died at Grimsby Military Hospital 5 days later. 


121038 Pte John Jackson aged 33. A shunter from Kilburn in Derby who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 8th August 1918. He was admitted to Hospital on the 9th November and died at Grimsby Military Hospital 6 days later. Son of Peter and Mary Jackson, of Repton, Derby, husband of Annie Jackson of Rueson Green, Kilburn, Derby.


121043 Pte William Woolins aged 19. A miner from Codnor who was who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 9th August 1918. He was admitted to Hospital on the 10th November and died at Grimsby Military Hospital 10 days later. Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Woollins, of Church St., Waingroves, Codnor, Derby.


121238 Pte Stephen Parish aged 32. A miner who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 2nd September 1918. He was admitted to Hospital on the 8th November and died at Louth in the VAD Hospital 7 days later. Husband of Florie Parish, of 17, Hugley Rd., Halesowen, Birmingham.


2/Lt George Rhodely Seneschall aged 24. Son of Mr. R. and Mrs. A. Seneschall, of 43, Salisbury St., Long Eaton.

 

 

 

 

On these days 5th-7th November 1918: three Derbyshire men are the last battle casualties

4486/241535 L/Cpl Edward Caleb Tanner DCM MM killed in action aged 21 and buried in Near West end of PRISCHES COMMUNAL CEMETERY. Son of Arthur and Sarah E. C. Tanner, of King St., Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

2124/240424 Pte Bernard James Bland died of wounds aged 22 and buried in ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN. Son of Frank and Emily Bland, of 48, Storforth Lane Terrace, Hasland, Chesterfield. A Pre-War Territorial who served with A” Company and was wounded on 8.8.15 at Zillebeke.

93877 Pte George Frank Johnson MM died of wounds and buried in PREMONT BRITISH CEMETERY

118547 Pte Charles Walker died of wounds aged 24 and buried in PREMONT BRITISH CEMETERY. Son of John and Caroline Walker, of Marehay, Ripley, Derby; husband of Martha Ann Walker, of The Green, Heage, Belper, Derby.

On this day 25th September 1918: fairly quite….

203482 Sergt Christopher Loomes DCM a farm labourer from Old Whittington. Old Contemptible who served with the 2nd Battalion and was then transferred to the 1/5th in 1916. Wounded on the 24th and died the following day. See here

7649/242445 Pte Sydney Ball.  Burton Observer dated 5.10.1918 records that he was hit by a piece of shell in the abdomen and died at 4.40am on the 23rd September. After visiting his brother who had been wounded and was in the Leicester Infirmary he at once enlisted although under Military age

203090 Pte John George Thomas Cavanagh and 93800 Pte W Clarke died of wounds

  • 6685/203090 Pte John George Thomas Cavanagh was a French polisher from Kentish Town enlisted in February 1916 and was mobilised and posted to the 5th Reserve Sherwood Foresters in October 1916. He arrived in France in January 1917.
  • 93800 Pte William Clarke aged 19 and from Brewood in Staffordshire. Posted to Sherwood Foresters approximately August 1917.

On this day 21st September 1918: John Marsh from Brampton was killed in action


3769/241213 Pte John Marsh. Enlisted in January 1915 and arrived in France in 1916 (has a 4-digit number). Buried in ROISEL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.

On this day 21st/22nd September 1918: the 5th Battalion trenches are raided

Enemy attacked 5th Sherwood Foresters. Attack repulsed with very heavy casualties

On this day 9th September 1918: William Holmes from Loscoe died of wounds

81640 Pte William Holmes was one of several men posted the the 1/5th Battalion. He was the husband of Ellen Holmes, of Loscoe Rd., Loscoe, nr. Codnor, Derbyshire.

He is buried in TERLINCTHUN BRITISH CEMETERY in WIMILLE

On these days 2nd – 5th September 1918 – successful operations carried out in the ESSARS sector

2.9.18: Quite day. Our line ran S14a 3.5, 58c 4.0, S8a 05.65, S1db 8.1, X6C 90.45.

3.9.18: A successful operation was carried out resulting in the capture of our objectives and a few prisoners.

5.9.18: Artillery active over the whole area. One shell hit HQ of 8th Sherwood Foresters and wounded Lieut Col.- RW CURRIN DSO and all his HQ staff, with the exception of his 2nd in Command.

Night 5th/6th relieved by 56th Division.


Casualties

  • 1769/73444 L/Cpl Harold Marsh aged 23 and the son of Ben and Mary Hannah Marsh; husband of Fanny Marsh of 3 Station Rd. Spa Lane in Chesterfield. Harold was a pre-War Territorial who enlisted in 1912 and arrived in France with the 46th Division in February 1915. He was wounded in 1915 and returned to England for treatment.
  • 20043/269262 Pte. Charles Norman Comins aged 23 and son of the late Charles and Mary Jane Comins of Lincoln. Charles had previously served with the 1/7th Battalion.
  • 93551 Pte. Frederick William Clay from Leek in Staffordshire. Frederick was a conscripted soldier who only served in France with the 1/6th Battalion.
  • 31847 Pte Francis William Dennis from Leabrooks in Derbyshire. Had previously served with the 16th Battalion.
  • 3815/266206 Pte. Albert Owen Hewson aged 21 and the Son of the late George Edward and Sarah Jane Hewson of 4 Harrington Drive on Derby Rd. in Nottingham. Had previously served with the 1/7th Battalion and arrived in France in 1916.
  • 3642/241152 Pte Joe Maxwell Moore aged 25 and the son of Harry and Sabine Moore of Whaley Common in Langwith Derbyshire.
  • 1699/240220 Sergt. George William Wall the son of William Wall of North Wood in Darley Dale Matlock. George was a pre-War Territorial who had enlisted in May 1912 and arrived in France with the 46th Division in February 1915.
  • 1537/240149 Cpl. Archibald Galbraith aged 28 and son of Thomas and Emily Galbraith; husband of E Galbraith of 21 Market St. Whaley Bridge. Archibald was a pre-War Territorial who had enlisted in January 1912 and arrived in France with the 46th Division in February 1915.
  • 2879/240778 Pte. Richard Milnes wounded by a bullet on the 4th September and died in the 22 Casualty Clearing Station 10 days later. Richard enlisted in October 1914 and arrived in France with the 46th Division in February 1915.

On this day 14th September 1918: Richard Milnes from Whaley Bridge died of wounds

2278/240778 Richard Milnes, a labourer from Whaley Bridge enlisted in October 1914 and arrived in France with the 46th Division in February 1915. He served with “B” Company and was wounded on 16.7.15 at Zillebeke.

The four men killed during the attacks on the 31st August were:-

  • 3588/241139 Pte Walter Gratton aged 25 and the son of Benjamin and Mary Gratton of 3 Rose Cottages in Upper Town near Bonsall, Matlock. Walter enlisted in November 1914 and would have arrived in France during 1916.
  • 60573 Pte Albert Edward Hook aged 21 and the son of Emma Annie and the late Frederick Hook of West View on Alfreton Rd. in Derby. Albert had previously served with the 15th and 1/7th Battalions.
  • 91366 Pte. Edwin Harold Hoyle who was the husband of Alice Hoyle of 6 East St. Ilkeston in  Derbyshire. Edwin was conscripted in early 1917 and posted to the Sherwood Foresters.
  • 3052/240873 L/Cpl Peter Ryan aged 32 and a fitter from Chapel-en-le-Frith. Peter was from Ballynahinch in County Tipperary and enlisted in October 1914. He went to France with the 46th Division in February 1915. He had served a total of 3 years and 317 days overseas, but had only just rejoined the 1/6th Battalion on 31st July. He is commemorated on the Ballynahinch and Chapel War Memorials.

All four men are buried in FOUQUIERES CHURCHYARD EXTENSION, Plot IV, Graves F1-3 & 8.
