Recruiting for the 2/6th Battalion took place at the Drill Hall in Chesterfield and at the various Company Headquarters throughout Derbyshire. In most cases, as the men were enlisted they were paid 3/- per day pay (including billet allowance) and 3d a day for clothing allowance and sent back to their homes until they were called up.

You have some excellent photographs and information on your site.
I wondered whether you might have anything on my Great Uncle Charles who joined the 3rd Derby Regiment and was a Draper at Swallow’s shop in Chesterfield and was 17 years and 10 months old when he joined on 17th October 1898.
He certainly served in the Boer War in 1902.
He emigrated to Canada, got married and had two children.
He joined the Canadian Army and fought from 1916. He was wounded in the face and sent home.
He returned to France and was wounded, sent to hospital in London but died on 26th October 1918.
He was awarded the DCM, as was his brother, Henry.
Do you know if I could find his army records from 1898 to 1902?

Hi Andy, glad you like the site and photos. Sorry but I don’t have any photos of Charles. You might try the Regimental Archivist. His Army records for that period might be on Ancestry and certainly the medal rolls will be, cheers mike
