War Diary [WO/95/2694]

Sept 1st. Roll call 7-30 a.m. Bayonet practice 11 – 11-45. Then short route march 12-00 till 12-45. Paid 20 frs at 2-30. Some went digging at night, but I was not selected. Band played at night again.

Sept 2nd. Roll call 6-30 a.m. Paraded at 7-30 with digging party, but told to fall out. Slept till dinner time & started moving to fresh billets at 2 p.m. Rain from 3 p.m. onwards. Everything beastly wet at night – wretched. Paraded at 5 p.m. with digging party & waited till 7-30 p.m. for motor buses. Did not turn up then, so dismissed – very glad.

Sept 3rd Rain nearly all day – wretched. Should have been inspected by Gen Plumer at 1 p.m. but declared off owing to rain. Did nothing but sleep & read. Went to a farmhouse at night & had a feed.
