9th Trench Duty 12th – 16th June 1915

12 June 1915

Kemmel 12.6.15: Returned to trenches for 4 days – 6 KOYLI (Major Rigg) attached for instruction. On the 15th the enemy blew up J3 right and having bombarded the line – chief casualties sustained by 8th Battalion and KOYLI. Killed 2 wounded 4 OR.

On JUNE 12th we relieved our 5th Battalion, and S.L.I. in K 3 trench. We are having some of the K.O.Y.L.I. with us. K 3 is a support trench.

The two men killed were:-

2296 Hart 2

2296 James Hart a shirt sorter from Chapel who was shot through the top of the head by a sniper.

241 Finney

 

241 William (Jack) Finney from Matlock Bath killed during stand to.

Both men are buried next to each other in Kemmel Château Military Cemetery and were the last men of the 1/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters to be buried in the Kemmel sector.
