12.5.1917 TRENCHES: Battalion relieved by 5th Sherwood Foresters and moved into Brigade Reserve in dugouts at West end of CITE ST PIERRE.

Stubbs deathCasualties:- Lieut. FWA STUBBS 4 other ranks killed and 10 other ranks wounded. The men killed were buried in Maroc British Cemetery.

Maroc British Cemetery Maroc

The 1/6th Battalion buried eight of their men in Maroc British Cemetery between 8th and 28th May 1917.

MAROC Row O

These five casualties of the 45th Trench Duty are buried next to each each in Row O along with other Sherwood Foresters from the 139th Brigade. Indeed, 34 men of the 139 Infantry Brigade are buried at Maroc.

Row P

The remaining two men of the 1/6th Battalion are buried in Row P along with several Germans.

10.5.1917 TRENCHES: 2nd Lieut FWA STUBBS MC killed in action.Stubbs death

“2nd Lieut. Stubbs was killed on the 10th May by a shell in the Cite St Pierre………Captain Robinson, who was with him on the fatal occasion, had a very narrow escape, for he had just crossed the road and dropped into the trench on the other side when the shell came. 2nd Lieut. Stubbs, who had moved back a few steps to take cover at a cellar entrance, received almost the full force of the explosion and was killed instantly”

Trenches May 10: Advanced Bde HQ shelled for 2 1/2 hours with 4.2s & 5.9s. 263 shells were fired of which 43 were “blinds”.

Wire was put out between BLACK WATCH ALLEY and SEAFORTH CRATER. Also a belt 100 yards long & 3 yards wide in front of our main line North of NETLEY.

During the night our machine guns fired on enemy tracks and lines of approach.

Our snipers shot 3 of the enemy in NELSON TRENCH.

The last man wounded in 1916 was 4109/241358 Pte William J Stevenson of “A” Company who later served with the Labour Corps.

31st: Enemy field battery shelled Green Street in the afternoon. A fortnight of bad weather has caused most of the inverted trench in the sector to fall in and the Communication trenches in the left sub sector. Nottingham Street and Lincoln Lane and St Martins Lane in the right sub sector are almost impassible.

May 6th: The Brigade moved in accordance with attached copy of Operations Order 55 and billeted the night as under

  • Bde MG Coy at CANNOTTEMENT

The Division is now on its way to join the VIIth Corps having left the XVIIth Corps.

The billets are very good and everyone will be sorry to move.

17.4.1916 Divl. School: 2/Lt F.W.A. Stubbs to Hospital sick.STUBBS

17.4.1916 Trenches: Relieved by 5th Sherwood Foresters. Casualties for tour other than mine.

Killed 2 OR, wounded 11 OR, died of wounds 2 OR.

As a set off to our mine the previous evening the enemy sprung a mine opposite BROADMARSH at 12 midnight this evening.

We had been suspecting trouble here & had practically cleared the trench. One listening post was partially buried but were dug out alive.

We had some difficulty in consolidating the Northern edge of this Crater on account of bombs & only a portion of the Crater trench was dug.

At daybreak posts were established at either end of this trench and the top & flanks of the Crater were covered by Lewis Guns.

We had some 45 casualties.

5th Battn relieved 6th Battn in the Right Sector this evening.
