On this day 2780 Pte George Slater, a Labourer from Biggin by Hartington and a 1914-recruit, was transfered to England for reasons unknown. George enlisted on the 14th October 1914 and was transferred to the 3/6th Battalion on the 1st May 1915. He was transferred to the 2/6th Battn on the 26th June 1915 and then immediately posted to the 1/6th Battn. He arrived in France with the II Reinforcement two days later.

After returning to England he was re-posted to the 3/6th Battalion in January 1916 before being transferred to the 1/5th Battalion in December 1916. George would later return to France on the 8th December 1916 and serve overseas until the 19th October 1918.

He was finally disembodied on the 14th April 1919.

2077  Miles2077 Pte George Miles, a paker stainer from Disley and a Pre-War Territorial of “H” Company, was admitted to the 1st North Midland Field Ambulance with influenza. 2077 Miles 2

George was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry (London Gazette 26.4.1917). He died of wounds at the 22nd Casualty Clearing Station on the 15th August 1918.

 12th December Draft of Reinforcements

The 4th Reinforcement arrived in France on the 9th November 1915 and many of these men joined the 1/6th Battalion ‘in the field’ on 12th December (see below). 3761 Tuckley

This reinforcement included the following men:-

2014 Sergt Ernest Hallam a labourer from Chapel-en-le-Frith who was a Pre-War Territorial.

4105 Pte Thomas Vero a collier from Brampton who enlisted in March 1915.

4073 William Openshaw from Chesterfield who enlisted in March 1915.

3761 Lawrence George Tuckley a miner from Danesmoor who enlisted in January 1915.
