3287 Pte. Tom Bennett of “D” Company was killed on the 28th June. He now has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial; however, Tom was in fact buried in a small cemetery in Armagh Wood that was used for trench burials at that time. Unfortunately, in the later fighting of June 1916, many of these small cemeteries were destroyed and it is likely that Tom’s grave was lost at this time.

Kemmel 20.6.1915: Left Kemmel 9 p.m. having at 3 p.m. handed over bivouacs to 1st K.O.Y.L.I. (Major Heathcote).

JUNE 20th. We have been temporarily transferred to the 1st Army Corp. and expect moving today. We marched 9 miles to a place called Vlamertinge, and we were billeted in huts.

He commanded II Corps from January 1915 and then, from May 1916, XVII Corps corps which he led until the end of the War.

 JUNE 15th. At 8.30 p.m. the Huns blew a mine up in J. 3 trench which was occupied by the 8th Battalion and the K.O.Y.L.I. There were 28 in it altogether, we had a nice set to, after our artillery bombarded them and they were sending 160lb trench mortars but did not land them far enough.

JUNE 13th. I took 3 men and went on a listening patrol in front of our trenches and we got within 40 or 50 yds of them, I was out 1 hour and 35 minutes.

JUNE 14th. I went out at ¼ to 11 on a listening patrol in front of our trenches and came in again at 11.

1369 Pte Fred Schofield 12.6.15 Dental caries and admitted to 1st NMFA. Returned to duty on 15.6.15.
2768 Pte Arthur Dovinson 12.06.15 Mental deficiency and admitted to 1st NMFA and 13 Stationary Hospital. Transferred to England on 16.615. Returned to France on 10.11.15 with the V Reinforcement.

Killed by a sniper and buried at Kemmel.

2768 Dovinson 1Page 1 of Arthur Dovinson’s B. 103 Casualty Form – Active Service showing his transfer to England on the 16th June due to ‘mental deficiency’ , which most likely refers to some form of stress due to serving in the trenches. Arthur returned to France with the V Reinforcement in November 1915 and re-joined the 1/6th on 2nd December 1915. He contracted scabies in April 1916 and after 5 days in the North Midland Field Ambulance he was ‘discharged to duty’.

He returned to France with the 30th Reinforcement in April 1917, but was posted to the 11th Battalion. He was reported missing on the 21st March 1918 during the German spring offensive.
