I'm not a Historian by profession - merely an (over) enthusiastic amateur. By day I'm a Professor of Genetics at Newcastle University with a translation research interest in rare bone diseases. At weekends I can be classified as a Yorkshire Cricket & Psychedelic Rock fan, but mostly I'm just on the Fells (or in the pub - when they were open!).

During November 1918 seven men from the 5th Reserve Battalion died of influenza

Six of the these men had been mobilised and posted to the 5th Reserve Battalion between August and September 1918. They were all admitted to Hospital between the 8th and 13th November 1918.

120935 Pte Joseph Holt aged 31. A coal miner from Kirkby who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 1st August 1918. He was admitted to Hospital on the 13th November and died at Louth in the VAD Hospital 9 days later. Son of Mary Ann Laban (formerly Holt), of Mount Pleasant Rd., Castle Gresley, Burton-on-Trent, and the late James Alfred Holt. Born at Linton Heath.


120963 Pte John Lowbridge aged 29. A miner from Chesterfield who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 1st August 1918. He was admitted to Hospital  on the 13th November and died at Louth in the VAD Hospital 3 days later. Son of John and Emma Lowbridge, of Pear Tree Cottage, Bridge St., Pilsley.


121031 Pte Frank Edward Bennett a coal miner from Pleasley Hill. who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 8th August 1918. He was admitted to Hospital on the 11th November and died at Grimsby Military Hospital 5 days later. 


121038 Pte John Jackson aged 33. A shunter from Kilburn in Derby who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 8th August 1918. He was admitted to Hospital on the 9th November and died at Grimsby Military Hospital 6 days later. Son of Peter and Mary Jackson, of Repton, Derby, husband of Annie Jackson of Rueson Green, Kilburn, Derby.


121043 Pte William Woolins aged 19. A miner from Codnor who was who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 9th August 1918. He was admitted to Hospital on the 10th November and died at Grimsby Military Hospital 10 days later. Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Woollins, of Church St., Waingroves, Codnor, Derby.


121238 Pte Stephen Parish aged 32. A miner who was mobilised and posted to the 5th Res Battn on the 2nd September 1918. He was admitted to Hospital on the 8th November and died at Louth in the VAD Hospital 7 days later. Husband of Florie Parish, of 17, Hugley Rd., Halesowen, Birmingham.


2/Lt George Rhodely Seneschall aged 24. Son of Mr. R. and Mrs. A. Seneschall, of 43, Salisbury St., Long Eaton.

 

 

 

 

On this day 14th November 1918 George Brocklehurst from Brampton died of wounds

3717/241185 Pte George Brocklehurst. Enlisted in January 1915 and arrived in France in 1916 and served with No 9 Platoon “C” Company. Died of wounds in 12 General Hospital in France.

On this day 14th November 1918: 46 NMD joined XIII Corps

14/11/18: Battn moved to billets in LANDRECIES. 46 Division left IX Corps and joined XIII Corps. Division not detailed to from part of Army of Occupation.

11/11/18 BOULOGNE: Armistice signed. Hostilities ceased at 11.00 hrs.

The following men died on this day

11260 Harry Noel Lancaster from Newcastle in Staffordshire. Attested in October 1916 and was mobilised on the 19th February 1917. Arrived in France in April 1918 and was posted to the 7th Battalion. Reported missing and Prisoner of War on the 16th April 1918 and died in the 11th November 1918 aged 19.

266018 Pte Albert Duke died of pneumonia in Nottingham Military Hospital aged 22. Son of Mrs. Hannah Wilford, of 8, Radcliffe Terrace, Radcliffe St., Nottingham. Born at Gamston, Notts. Died of pneumonia whilst home on leave. Arrived in France in June 1915.

4643/266399 Pte Rowland Young from Nottingham. Arrived in France in October 1915 wounded and taken prisoner in March 1915. Died of influenza in hospital in Germany on 11 November 1918. He is buried in Niederzwenren Cemetery.


100136 Pte Thomas Savage Handy died of injuries under suspicious circumstances aged 35. Son of Thomas and Lucy Handy; husband of Gertrude Handy, of 29, Halford St., Smethwick, Staffs. Attested May 1916 and mobilised January 1918.

On these days 5th-7th November 1918: three Derbyshire men are the last battle casualties

4486/241535 L/Cpl Edward Caleb Tanner DCM MM killed in action aged 21 and buried in Near West end of PRISCHES COMMUNAL CEMETERY. Son of Arthur and Sarah E. C. Tanner, of King St., Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

2124/240424 Pte Bernard James Bland died of wounds aged 22 and buried in ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN. Son of Frank and Emily Bland, of 48, Storforth Lane Terrace, Hasland, Chesterfield. A Pre-War Territorial who served with A” Company and was wounded on 8.8.15 at Zillebeke.

93877 Pte George Frank Johnson MM died of wounds and buried in PREMONT BRITISH CEMETERY

118547 Pte Charles Walker died of wounds aged 24 and buried in PREMONT BRITISH CEMETERY. Son of John and Caroline Walker, of Marehay, Ripley, Derby; husband of Martha Ann Walker, of The Green, Heage, Belper, Derby.

On these days 5th-6th November 1918: following up the enemy

5/11/18 CATILLON: Battn moved in early morning (03.00 hrs) to N outskirts of LA GROISE and later passing through the LINCOLN and LEICESTER Brigade followed up the enemy to the outskirts of PRISCHES.

This village being held in strength by MG rearguards it was decided to stay during night 5/6th in sites reached.

Casualties: 1 OR killed, 1 OR missing, 12 OR wounded.


6/11/18: The enemy having retired during the night, the Battalion entered PRISCHES amidst the great excitement and enthusiasm of the civilian inhabitants. Battn billeted in PRISCHES.

On this day 4th November 1918

4/11/18: Battn fell in at 06.00 hrs, moved up to L’ARBRE DE GUISE and formed part of a general reserve for the 1st and 32nd Division’s attack on the OISE-SAMBRE CANAL.

Orders received to move again and in the afternoon Battn moved up to vicinity of LA LOUVIERE. Night 4/5th at CATILLON.
