2/6th Battalion at Buxton 1914-15 nd later Epping in 1915
I’m not sure where I came across these on the internet – so apologies for posting without due acknowledgement/permission, but they are so good that I couldn’t resist…..

The 2/6th Battalion at Empire Hotel in Buxton – November 1914 – February 1915

The move to Epping

fabulous photos Mike, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Nigel
I just had a quick scan at the main image as i am trying to track down my grandfather.
I need to look properly but i was struck by the strain and anxiety showing on these men’s faces.
Just can’t imagine what would have been going through their minds.
Morning Elizabeth – What’s your grandfathers name. Also this was Empire Hotel, which was only seasonal (summer) and they were stationed there the winter of 1914-15 – it must have been freezing!
Dear Mike
Apologies for the delay in replying to your email.
We have little info re this grandfather and was about to give up when I checked a birth certificate and he was described as private in Notts & Derbyshire.
His name was Harry Wilkinson born 1898 (as i can recall) a miner at Grassmoor Colliery, born in the village.
I think he joined up early as he married on Boxing Day 1914 at Chesterfield’s Crooked Spire. I made the assumption (probably wrongly) that he married as he was going to war.
Beyond this i have no idea. My father said he used to box in the army but no further detail.
I very much appreciate your interest Mike
Thank you
Annie H
Awesome idea to share the photos as with all your photos.
Such a sad ending to a beautiful hotel
Thanks David
