John Branson. Private, 70737. 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters. Died of wounds 27 October 1916. Enlisted: New Mills. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Thanks Jordan. You might be interested to know that John was one of 37 men that was posted to the 1st Sherwood Foresters on 21st September 1916 (only a month before he was killed!). The number that he was given 7**** is part of a series that was used to transfer men from the Territorial Battalions into the Regular or Service Battalions of the Sherwood Foresters. Whilst I can’t be 100% certain I am pretty confident that he would have been transferred from one of the Territorial Reserve Battalions based in England to France in Aug/Sept 1916 and posted to the 1st Battalion. That gives you a window of 21/9-27/10 when he was in France with the 1/Sherwoods. He died of his wounds in the 24th Field Ambulance, which is strange why his grave was lost after the War. Cheers Mike
Thank you so much, your information is hugely interesting as we know very little about him. Do you perhaps know where I could find any more information or even photographs of him or the regiment?
Thanks
