On these days 12th and 13th June 1915

JUNE 13th. I took 3 men and went on a listening patrol in front of our trenches and we got within 40 or 50 yds of them, I was out 1 hour and 35 minutes.

JUNE 14th. I went out at ¼ to 11 on a listening patrol in front of our trenches and came in again at 11.

Pte Patrick Fox 12.06.15 Foreign body in eye and admitted to 1st NMFA. Returned to duty on 15.6.15.
1369 Pte Fred Schofield 12.6.15 Dental caries and admitted to 1st NMFA. Returned to duty on 15.6.15.
2768 Pte Arthur Dovinson 12.06.15 Mental deficiency and admitted to 1st NMFA and 13 Stationary Hospital. Transferred to England on 16.615. Returned to France on 10.11.15 with the V Reinforcement.

Killed by a sniper and buried at Kemmel.

2768 Dovinson 1Page 1 of Arthur Dovinson’s B. 103 Casualty Form – Active Service showing his transfer to England on the 16th June due to ‘mental deficiency’ , which most likely refers to some form of stress due to serving in the trenches. Arthur returned to France with the V Reinforcement in November 1915 and re-joined the 1/6th on 2nd December 1915. He contracted scabies in April 1916 and after 5 days in the North Midland Field Ambulance he was ‘discharged to duty’.

2678 dovinson 2Page 2 of Arthur Dovinson’s B. 103 Casualty Form – Active Service recording that he gun shot wound in the arm on the 1st July 1916 and was again transferred to hospital in England. He returned to France with the 30th Reinforcement in April 1917, but was posted to the 11th Battalion. He suffered a shrapnel wound in the right arm on 30th September 1917 and was transferred to hospital in England in October.2678 Dovinson 3Page 3 of Arthur Dovinson’s B. 103 Casualty Form – Active Service recording his return to France in January 1918 and posting to 2/8th Battalion before his transfer to 2/5th Battalion. He was reported missing on the 21st March 1918 during the German spring offensive.

9th Trench Duty 12th – 16th June 1915

Kemmel 12.6.15: Returned to trenches for 4 days – 6 KOYLI (Major Rigg) attached for instruction. On the 15th the enemy blew up J3 right and having bombarded the line – chief casualties sustained by 8th Battalion and KOYLI. Killed 2 wounded 4 OR.

On JUNE 12th we relieved our 5th Battalion, and S.L.I. in K 3 trench. We are having some of the K.O.Y.L.I. with us. K 3 is a support trench.

The two men killed were:-

2296 James Hart a shirt sorter from Chapel who was shot through the top of the head by a sniper.

241 Finney

 

241 William (Jack) Finney from Matlock Bath killed during stand to.

Both men are buried next to each other in Kemmel Château Military Cemetery and were the last men of the 1/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters to be buried in the Kemmel sector.

Wounded in the field and transferred to England. Discharged due to wounds on 7.6.15 (para 392 XVI KR).

3341 Pte Ernest Pearce 7.06.15 Wounded in the field.
1400  Pte George Bailey 7.6.15 GS wound in both thighs. Rejoined Battalion on the 13th June.

JUNE 5th, At 10.30 p.m. we had a platoon of kit. Shropshire Light Infantry came in for instructions and they are going out tonight with us.

1687 Pte Willie Coleman 4.06.15 GSW in scalp and admitted to 1st NMFA and 4 General Hospital. Transferred to England on 6.6.15. Returned to France on 4.3.16 with 6th Reinforcement.
2144 Pte Bradshaw Goodwin 4.06.15 Gunshot wound in chest and admitted to 1st NMFA, 2 CCS and 2 General Hospital. Returned to England on 10.6.15. Retuned to France on 10.9.17 with 38th Reinforcement.

Wounded in the field.

Kemmel 3.6.1915: Returned to trenches for 5 days. Casualties: Killed 3 other ranks, wounded 1 Officer and 8 OR.

Headquarters  at HOWITZER FARM. Took over L5 & L7 & M1, M2 & VIERSTRAAT.

5th Shropshire Light Infantry attached.

The men killed were:-

2140 Pte. Robert Ball a locomotive fireman from Fairfield near Buxton.

2051 Pte. Walter Houghton a plate layer from Darley Dale.
